Welcome to the Sandals family and the Sandals Corporate University (SCU) - "The Change-Included Experience". Through a collaborative effort with experienced partners, SCU is an educational system designed to assist in the development of Team Members through on the job training and development. Along with prior work experience; the support of resort teams and designated courses and programmes, Team Members will have an opportunity to realize their full potential. Along the way, the learning process will provide a myriad of opportunities where Team Members are able to incorporate what they have learned and present recommendations for better company efficiencies. Together we both learn. Courses are designed to be practical, where all lessons learnt can be applied to the job. Through research and expert guidance, the course content has been developed based on experience and international best practices. Allowing Team Members to learn while they work, the courses are delivered in a variety of ways such as on-resort classroom training, practical ‘on-the-floor’ training and online/internet based. Credits obtained from these studies will enable Team Members the opportunity to progress to higher levels and matriculate to degree programmes. The learning process is tracked and with each course completed, a new level of development is recorded providing further opportunity of professional growth. We invite you to be a force for personal and professional growth, learning and change, as you travel on your sandals journey.
Long before the formal introduction of the Sandals Corporate University (SCU), Sandals Resorts International maintained a strong tradition of ‘hiring the attitude and training the skill’ – a training culture which created the foundation for the launch and subsequent success of the SCU. Merrick Fray, Sandals’ founding and former Managing Director, was pivotal in instituting this hiring and training culture. The Fray Approach focused on a candidate’s attitude, zeal to learn and ambition. As explained by Fray, “When I interviewed people, I spent a lot of time with them, gaining insight into their backgrounds and lives. One key area I looked at was the person’s ambition. I wanted to know if they had a sense of growth and if they wanted to get somewhere.”
As far back as the 1980s Team Members at the resort’s flagship, Sandals Montego Bay, gathered in various cottages for informal training sessions. There they were taught various techniques and skills related to their jobs by master practitioners in their fields. According to Karen Sprung, former playmaker, “We started training in Cottages 1 and 2 under the direction of veteran resort Entertainment Director Basil Cahusac. What Basil taught us was probably some of the best background in entertainment and theater training anyone could have.” Over at Cottage 6, a similar scenario was unfolding. Veteran Sandals employee and Head Maitre D’ Robert Stone was hiring and training dining room staff. He shared, “I brought over waiters from Jack Tar Beach Village where I had been working and I conducted service training classes on table setting, serving and overall dining room service etiquette.” Throughout the years, Sandals has maintained its commitment to training and development – a commitment which began with Merrick Fray, spread to the cottages of Sandals Montego Bay, grew into the CEO Adam Stewart’s vision for the SCU and culminated in its creation. On March 12, 2012, in the presence and endorsement of four Caribbean Heads of Government (Jamaica, St. Lucia, The Bahamas and Antigua) the Sandals Corporate University was officially launched. Projecting a US$5M investment over 5 years, the launch of the SCU, the only of its kind in the regional hospitality industry, has made dreams come true for countless employees and with its consistent addition of sought-after education partners and in-demand programmes, it is obvious there is much more to come.
